Exclamation Officer charged in George Floyd's death argues drug overdose killed him, not knee

Cops' lawyers make bombshell claims in George Floyd case: Bodycam shows Floyd ingesting fatal amount of drugs before arrest;
he died of overdose

Allegations to shake up the case

A defense attorney for the fired Minneapolis police officer charged with murder
in connection with the death of George Floyd is asking a judge to drop all
charges, arguing the 46-year-old man's death was allegedly from a drug
overdose and not caused by the officer planting his knee in the back of Floyd's neck.

"Put simply, Mr. Floyd could not breathe because he had ingested a lethal
dose of fentanyl and, possibly, a speedball. Combined with sickle cell trait,
his pre-existing heart conditions, Mr. Floyd's use of fentanyl and
methamphetamine most likely killed him," Nelson argued. "Adding fentanyl
and methamphetamine to Mr. Floyd's existing health issues was tantamount
to lighting a fuse on a bomb."

lets wait for an autopsy report on that rather than a Lawyers claim. I mean how can he claim that it was definitely either an OD or an existing condition but no way it could be the knee on his neck......

So would he have been alive if the knee hadn't gone onto his neck?

...he has a murder charge against him, he has a defence and a defence attorney and a line of defence etc...that’s how it works really...what he says isn’t ‘reliable’...

Autopsy will show if he had a fatal level of drugs in his system. My bet though if there were any drugs at all in his system, is that the lawyer will try to argue that because of his other health conditions, it's "impossible to know" whether or not the circumstance that lead to death was the restraint or the drugs. The physical cause is likely to be the same in both scenarios (respiratory failure).

It will be an absolute disaster for black rights movements if it can be proven that he had a fatal dose of drugs in his system. If it comes down to ambiguity (drugs in his system but not a definite fatal dose) then it'll only ignite more fires.

If I had to guess at an outcome... unless he had zero trace of any drug in his system, the "question mark" will be used to negotiate a guilty plea to a lesser charge. I think he's up on 2nd-degree Murder, may well wriggle it down to Involuntary Manslaughter.

I think more protests will kick off if that happens.

Its not about any black lives movement

its about justice and if the officers are found not guilty then that is brilliant for their lives

Its about a fair and honest trial with all the best evidence and a fair and honest verdict

the autopsy report was already released and made no mention of a drug overdose. Anyway, if he had overdosed, why was the officer kneeling on his neck rather than providing him medical attention. As defenses go, it's pretty flimsy ... it may be enough to get him off of course

Nelson also included Minneapolis Police Department training materials on the proper use of the "Maximal Restraint Technique," in which photos show demonstrations of officers simulating putting their knee on a handcuffed subject's neck.

Its how they are trained

"Whether or not he was intoxicated or had medications in his system is irrelevant to the cause of death, which is homicide, which is death by the hand of another," Floyd family attorney Antonio Romanucci told CNN. "The end result, which is George Floyd's death, would not be any different."

So maybe instead of putting his Knee on someone overdosing for 8mins, he could have tried help?

Oh right. It’s a bollocks excuse anyway.

On May 29, the country was told that the autopsy of George Floyd “revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxiation,” and that “potential intoxicants” and preexisting cardiovascular disease “likely contributed to his death.” This requires clarification. Importantly, these commonly quoted phrases did not come from a physician, but were taken from a*charging document*that utilized politicized interpretations of medical information. As doctors, we wish to highlight for the public that this framing of the circumstances surrounding Floyd’s death was at best, a misinterpretation, and at worst, a deliberate obfuscation.
