Probably because he knew just going all in on the ending the way the book does is a very overdone idea in film. So he tried to be too clever about it and spoiled it in the process. It would've worked much better had he just owned the kind of movie it was and stripped it back, rather than being preoccupied with trying to be arty and pretentious.

Yeah, it's all kind of meaningless bull**** that was thrown in to give the story the illusion of more depth than it actually had. I read the summary of the book on Wikipedia out of interest afterwards and it would have been a far better film if they just adapted it straight up, the ending would still be cliched but it would be better than what we got.
