They could probably have a rule that the phone has to be turned off unless a person had good reason but taking away a phone all together is not realistic.

Anyone support this, answer me this - your child goes to school and their phone is either taken off of them or left at home. After school your child gets into an accident or is followed home and said phone could have been their only means of alerting help how would you feel if the worst happened?

Also weren't the first alerts that school shootings were going on from students in class? Let the killer carry on shooting until a teacher can get to an outside line?

all it requires is a semblance of control in the classroom ... don't use your phone. There are plenty of other things kids could do that would be considered disruptive but they don't do it because the teacher has control, why should using phones be any different

A boomer-ish point of view.

Phones are too useful to ban them in schools at this point, they should be integrated in the teaching, if anything.

Banning phones in school won't stop cyberbullying or the negative effects of social media, it's foolish to think that it would.

My daughters school used to allow kids who walked to/from school themselves to take their phones and leave them at the office through the day. After COVID they said that was too risky, and that they’d just have to not bring phones at all, because they couldn’t compromise on the “no phones in class” rule. So now my daughter takes her phone in an inside zip pocket in her bag and keeps it on silent - because **** their rules.

I graduated 12 years ago and phones were already frowned upon, even at lunch time, but they're a part of daily life and a lot of kids depend on them for many reasons. Also a lot of young people who suffer from mental health issues or are neglected and abused turn to technology as a coping mechanism, I did that and I know of kids right now who do it. They should teach time management and appropriate technology use. Kids all have access to an old phone at home that nobody is using, they'll turn that in and continue with their phones throughout the day as normal.

I don’t think that they should be banned in schools since like others have mentioned, they provide some security and safety when travelling to and from school.

I agree that they can be a distraction in classrooms but surely they can implement a system where they have to leave them face down on there desks on silent mode whilst lessons are taking place or have lockers to store them and then returned at the end of lesson maybe.
