Quand il pleut, il pleut

…we had a member…(…I say ‘had’ only because he hasn’t posted since 2018…)…who has lived the situation in Israel his whole life…when he posted regarding it…?…even though it could be said that he would have a ‘bias’ view in favour of his homeland in Israel…?…his words were always that it was complicated and layered with no clear ‘wrong or right’….that’s also similar to most things I’ve read of any more depth knowledge on the situation than I have…it seems like a very fair and reasoned opinion as well…

…something that I read when reading some discussions regarding the subject which seemed to be agreed by all taking part…
‘If you study the conflict for 1 hour the Israeli's are clearly right. If you study the conflict for a dozen hours the Palestinians are clearly right. If you study it any longer, you no longer know who is right.’

Bitter internal squabbles are nothing new in Labour – nor is obsessing about
the Middle East. But the average voter in Hartlepool might have been somewhat bemused that Starmer this week issued a one-sided denunciation of Israel, amid the worrying escalation of violence in the region. “Israel must respect international law,” he tweeted on Monday evening. “They must take steps, immediately, to work with Palestinian leaders to de-escalate tensions”. This curiously partisan analysis points the blame squarely at Israel. It implies that Palestinian leaders are waiting patiently by the phone, ready to de- escalate at the first hint of dove-like overture from the Israelis – rather than participating enthusiastically in this conflict, with their own motives for stirring violence at an already tense time. And which leaders? His predecessor’s “friends in Hamas”, the ones presently firing hundreds of rockets into Israel, often from civilian areas? Or perhaps Fatah, and President Abbas, who hope further rioting will provide an excuse to call off an election they know they would lose. The situation in Israel is far more complex, and contested, than the Leader of the Opposition suggests. Yet the simplistic oppressor/victim narrative around Israel has always appealed to Labour’s factions; uniting Utopian Corbynistas and the worthy Starmerite soft-Left alike. BBC apparatchiks, with a similar mindset and attendant blindspots, are equally prone to this framing of events. After a week which has asked the Labour Party a string of existential questions, a retreat to this familiar comfort blanket must seem hugely appealing. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/202...-comfort-zone/ |

Too glam to give a damn
|
This is obviously a complex issue that probably requires more nuance on both sides of the debate, but what grinds my gears is how so many slacktivists on the left decide to make Palestine their priority whenever it becomes part of the mainstream news cycle.
