No not really....I mean you need a bit of strength but we never had any problems. You can find routes with just a couple of locks...but its more fun with them imo...sometimes you share a lock with another Boat and everyone chats to each other. Then as you slowly chug along down the Canal...cocktail in one hand, good company and lovely countryside...
