Many Protestants vote DUP to stop Sinn Fein becoming the dominant party, many Catholics vote for Sinn Fein to stop the DUP being dominant. It’s fear from both sides, a leftover from the Troubles.
The other parties are left behind now, like mine (the SDLP) Alliance and the Unionist Party. Being from a mixed marriage, I was a kid terrified that my Mum or Dad would be murdered by a Catholic OR a Protestant, cos being married to one of ‘them’ was enough to get you killed, especially as my Dad was in politics.
I think the DUP aren’t going to last much longer as a dominant party, they are a mess.
