Weren't they to stop your back getting sweaty? I'm sure I only ever saw them in taxis though. I think there are more modern options these days .

I remember when cars had little ashtrays next to the gearstick (yuck) and the 12v slot was for an actual lighter instead of USB ports.

My dad actually smoked in the car, too. That little ashtray was always stuffed with cigarette butts. Urgh.
