Austrians are days away from a first lockdown for anyone not fully vaccinated, after record infections were reported across the country.

Upper Austria province will impose restrictions from Monday if it gets the go-ahead from the federal government. Salzburg faces similar measures.

Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said a national lockdown for the unvaccinated was "probably inevitable".

Two-thirds of people should not suffer because others were hesitant, he said.

Upper Austria, which borders Germany and the Czech Republic and has a population of 1.5 million, has the country's highest level of infection and the lowest vaccination rate.

Nationally, a record 11,975 Covid-19 infections were recorded in the past 24 hours and Austria's coronavirus commission has warned of a threat that "must be taken seriously".

Slight blip .. most sections slightly down as per trend BUT sadly new infections are around 5,000 higher than last Thursday

For whatever reason vaccine hesitancy is much higher in German speaking countries than most of Western Europe so things are tougher

Eastern Europe has just been having a very bad time because of their low vaccine uptake but it seems to be stabilising now

this is more leaked from the media what'll be announced tonight in the press conference


but already some criticism from theatre producers


well it is not the government's fault, public themselves are to blame for not being able to think themselves about maybe better to wear masks and distance on your own rather than these lockdowns being necessary

more of a concern is that quite a high amount of people between the age groups 50-65 on the ICU's and in hospital again

in my nation, and in france, and also many new cases, hospitalisation numbers in germany either

and most of which what was jabbed with astrazeneca


hope this is not the case in the UK? since a huge percentage of britain is jabbed with AZ if i remember correctly

yes and especially those who are vaxxed with astrazeneca, priority for those people for the boosters otherwise hospitalisation and icu numbers might go up drastically in UK as well

yes @Alf there was a protest outside of the building where the press conference was being held in The Hague


5 arrests were made by police, and water cannons were deployed to break up the group of protesters

one of the reasons europe is suffering more than the uk at the moment is that europe stuck to the standard interval between the 2 jabs whereas the uk extended the interval to 12 weeks, so the protection is more long lasting in the uk than it is in europe.

However, at some point, it will all equalise again. We all go through cycles of infection and we are just on a different sync to the rest of europe
