Default Skip diving

Ok this is something I will never comprehend but EVEN NOW people are STILL going through strangers & neighbours skips , I'd be scared of catching something.

Every time I see a skip I want to throw rubbish in , NOT jump in and rip bin bags and rummage through someone else's old dusty belongings and garbage. It's gross & nosey .... just why ??.

I know some are desperate, and some are thieves trying to steal people's personal information.

I'm always paranoid and try to cut up and scribble off anything with my name and personal details. As some people will go through any trash it seems,no matter how dusty and old.... which is weird .

Hubby opened the back gates ready for the builders one day and found the fella around the corner helping himself to bricks out of the skip.
Poor fella was mortified at getting caught, hubby laughed and told him to help himself and that there would be loads more to come.

I don't know why anyone would have an issue with this, you would be surprised at what gets chucked out that can make someone a bit of cash, if someone wants to have a rummage around in a skip good luck to them

There's an old chap (and I mean OLD old, he must be late 80's at the very least) at the end of my street who goes around collecting any scrap wood that he sees in people's gardens, I presume to use as firewood...

...about a year ago, large house at the other end of the street decided to chop down all the trees surrounding their garden - and this is not just a few little trees, it was surrounded by 20 or so fully grown, 20m+ tall trees. The fellers with chainsaws were there for over a week, chopping them down and then further dividing into chunks to be removed and ... ... the old chap spent hours every single day going back and forward with a wheelbarrow collecting it up and putting it in the collection in his garden . There's STILL loads in his little wood shelter thing. Really amazing scenes. He's half blind too, and likes to ride around on a bike, you just have to dodge him in the car he doesn't GAF.

i just love characters like that in the neighbourhood. Places are just so sterile these days that genuine characters are disappearing

He probably should have knocked and asked first but I think most people would be happy that someone was getting use out of stuff that was going to be thrown away. We could all do with recycling a bit more anyway. One (wo)mans rubbish is another (wo)mans treasure and all that

I was walking the dog one day and the guy walking in front spotted two loungers on top of a skip and off he went with them, they were getting a second life and not going to landfill. win win

Which is great, I am surprised he took those though, I swear you can't even give away couches/armchairs for free anymore. I see it on those fb groups, people trying to give them away all the time and no one is ever interested!

To be fair these basically still exist, you just usually have to invite them over on Facebook. There's always some bloke in the local area who will turn up in an '05 reg people carrier and take away your old crap for free. When it's scrap metal they get competitive.

We gave away an almost brand new recliner away for free a few years back. We had a reclining sofa + chair combo but wanted a corner sofa, the sofa part was pretty well stained (we had it when the youngest was a baby/toddler, so...) so we just dumped that, but the chair had basically barely been used at all. No one ever sat on it unless there were visiters over (you couldn't see the telly from where it was, you see, making it useless) and some guy wanted it for his elderly dad whose reclining chair was falling apart at the seams. He came along with him to look at it and his wee face lit up, he was so pleased with it .

I think in general though, people are all about appearances these days so they want "new things". Plus you can get them on easy credit, usually low interest or interest free, which tempts people into more expensive ones.

Its not a nice place to rummage in though, they can take what they want but the problem is they're usually messy about it .

Scrap metal collectors & brick collectors just take what they want, without disrupting things too much which is fine. But the identity thieves & nosy parkers are far less discreet and very untidy.

It depends what is in the skip, some are full of building rubble and some are just full of attic/house clearances, tbh I have never seen this, you mean they throw the stuff on the ground? I dont have must sympathy for people who put paperwork in a bag and put it on a skip as it can be shredded down and be recycled in the weekly waste

Yeah literally throwing skip rubbish on the floor ,and all over the place without a care in the world.

As for papers when a skip is there people will use it for everything as it's handy for them . People even dump nasty used starbucks coffee mugs ,and mcflurry ice creams half eaten in there . That's why I'd never want to go searching through a skip .

Well its not a nice place to rummage but as I said people (including myself) throw good stuff away and if it benefits someone else then great. Wash it down..have a shower...everyones happy. There are also some desperate people out there and anyone who takes to rummaging through skips are desperate people in most cases...

That happens all the time , if it's a public road then anyone and everyone will throw in any random crap including food & drink waste , as they see it as a dumping ground.
