absolutely not. I lived in Cyprus for several years, i know first hand what it's like. It's not to be trusted until verified. Bear in mind that the UK has had delta and omicron coexisting for the last 6 weeks or more with millions infected and there have been no examples of the same here.

Viruses are self-replicating, they don't "breed" so if this new strain has traits of both, it's a coincidental evolution of one of the strains not a "combination" of the two strains. Most likely would be a Delta variant with some spike mutations that make it spread more like Omicron.

An interesting tidbit I read a month or so ago is that previous mutations had been sort of linear (one leading to the next) but Omicron actually seemed to be an offshoot of early 2020 Covid (pre-"Kent"/Alpha), a totally different evolutionary pathway to Delta. Basically they're not parent/child or siblings, but rather distant cousins that share the same great-great-grandparent. I don't know if that held up to further study but it would go some way to explaining the apparently quite different symptoms.

Yes the people who released Covid 19 then released Omicron to end the pandemic

Their work, so far is done

the latest i heard is that having had a cold previously can increase your protection against omicron, which makes sense given omicron symptoms are similar to that of a common cold.

The problem we have is that there is so much bollocks out there it's best to ignore most of it until there is at least some solid verification

I know a number of people who have had Omicron including my niece who is both overweight and diabetic. The symptoms appear to be mild.

I doubt that can be true - while "only" around 10,000 (or the 150,000) deaths have been under 60's, it seems unlikely that only 6% of those had no underlying condition. Unless they're being extremely lenient on what's considered an underlying condition (e.g. the vast majority of people in the UK are slightly overweight - it shouldn't be considered a medical comorbidity unless they are actually obese).

HOWEVER yes I think focus is taken off of age at times. I know there's a sort of moral outrage stance of "it doesn't matter!!" but... well... it does matter, especially when it comes to interpretting stats and what they mean. This is a graph (whole pandemic) of deaths per 100k population by age group. What it shows is really quite stark.

Basically based on this data... infected demographic is going to play an absolutely MASSIVE role in case fatality rate. Even if there were NO vaccines, NO herd immunity from previous infection, NO "milder strain" ... full on OG Covid running rampant...

If the vast majority of infections are in the under-60's then death rates are going to look massively reduced compared to the first wave and winter 2020/2021 when it was sweeping through care home settings.

If the infected demographic was mainly under 40's it'd look like a mild illness with a few random severe reactions (as with any illness).

If the infected demographic was mainly under 25 it would never even have registered on anyone's radar.

Or in other words

If the rumours are true and Covid is currently sweeping through younger demographics - schools, universities, various social scenes - then the death stats are going to be flat as a pancake and the data means nothing in terms of anything else.
