The reverse is also true though, he knows that he can continue his campaign in Ukraine relatively confident that NATO countries will not directly become involved so long as he doesn't hand them a mandate to do so. If he does, the invasion of Ukraine will fail. Things may also get far worse than that, but first and foremost, he doesn't have the resources to continue the war in Ukraine
and tackle NATO and he knows that, so it's unlikely he would actually attack a NATO country. It's not a winnable war for Russia. The end result is that Russia loses, or nukes drop and everyone loses. There's no Russia vs NATO scenario where Russia wins. If people think the weapons Russia has been using in Ukraine are scary, they should take a peep at some of the horrors the US has under its belt.
