A public information campaign to help people reduce energy bills this winter was pulled by No 10 on the grounds of cost, a cabinet minister has said.

The campaign to encourage household energy saving would have cost up to Ł15m, Nadhim Zahawi told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme.

The PM's office raised objections to the plan, the BBC reported on Friday.

And asked about the possibility of winter blackouts, Mr Zahawi said these were "very unlikely".

Amid concerns about rising household energy costs, the government has said it would limit average bill rises to Ł2,500 through government borrowing, at a cost of Ł60bn for six months.

To help people save energy and cut costs, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) had been preparing a public information campaign.

But Liz Truss is reported to have been "ideologically opposed" to the campaign, fearing it would be too interventionist.

Does he think we are that stupid? It's an outright lie that the campaign was cancelled do to cost

I’m picking up a generator tomorrow from auction plus I’ve got two lpg generator’s in a vehicle that was used as a mobile classroom

But I was thinking because of my daughter I get priority texts from the power supplier so I might not get any lost of power.

the worst case scenario has been changed to a 7 day power cut over the winter. It's pretty obvious where things are heading

It's okay if you have battery powered lighting but what about access to the Internet, if your router is switched off and you can't charge your phone.

We have Small Power Banks, cheap to buy
that before any Power Cut
can be charged up.

And at shops I will be OK
as I use CASH.
