They literally didn't no matter how you look at it, and there's well-established research showing that younger siblings who have more than a 12 year age gap to their older sibling have a more similar experience to only-children than people who have close in age siblings. Whether someone is a younger, older, middle sibling or only child often has clear influence on personality development.
I'm pretty sure it's even what she said... she didn't say "I'm an only child" or disown her sister, she said that in her earliest memories her sister was already an adult so she grew up as an only child.
