we've seen all these things before, people vote lib dem at local elections and byelections as a protest vote and then the vote disappears at the GE. Also, it's easy to make gains from an almost non existent position

Labour will win the next GE unless they shoot themselves in the foot. It's as simple as that

If this is going to be a "dry run" for the election, it doesn't look great for anyone. Unless the LibDems reach some kind of agreement, the votes may well be split too far to dislodge the Tories from anything but a minority government.

State of play at 8.30am
The results are now in from 60 of the 230 local authorities across England
where elections have been held.

The Tories have now lost 180 seats while Labour is currently up 132.

The Liberal Democrats have gained 56 while the Green Party has gained 13.

I'm surprised at the only small gains for the Greens.
This is a mixed bag.
There's a great deal of results to come.
It's the breakdown of votes that John Curtice said was most important to look at.
He said to be in line with the current national polling.
Labour would need to getting to around a 9%/10% lead over the Cons.

It seems Labour is from the 2019 figures these were last fought on.
Labour is around 39%+
The Cons on or a bit under 30%
Lots to come in yet so where that will be at the end of all the results is obviously unknown.
The only message for me at this point in time is, the results so far would indicate the Cons out at a general election.
That is all I want and hope to see.

Nothing however is assured as to politics as we all who follow it know.
Up to now though, the only Party with next to nothing to crow about today so far are the Cons.

A defiant Rishi Sunak insisted there has not been a "massive groundswell of
movement towards the Labour Party" at the local elections in England despite
the Tories being on course to suffer heavy losses.

Rishi is focussing on

-halving the debt
-cutting inflation
-growing the economy
-reducing hospital waiting lists
-stopping the illegal small boats

Those are the governments priorities and he thinks also the people's priorities

He told all news media earlier today

A Lib-Lab coalition wouldn't be the worst thing at a GE, the Lib Dems could constrain some of the more radical leftists in Labour

honestly dont think it matters who is in charge providing its not the tory party. Another term of tory government would be an absolute disaster.

So, my vote will be an anti tory vote at the GE rather than anything else. Strategically vote for the party most likely to win a tory seat

Showing how the antiSemetism isn't being tolerated is a pretty big change.

Labour overreacting to the results as usual. Haven't had our results here yet but I expect the Tories to have got a real pasting.
