Lard is a much safer fat than oil, especially seed oils.
I use Lard, dripping or ghee for frying that needs a high temperature and I use lard for making pastry. Like you, that's how my gran used to cook.

Times were hard back in the day but they didn’t have so much processed food or takeaways to tempt them as we do now
