Tbf Southgate is the only England Manager to consistently get England deep into major competitions, so he does deserve some credit.

And without meaning to single Sven out, but his team did worse with much better players than what Southgate has currently got.

Maybe someone should start a thread comparing the two teams/ squads ?

Default England Vs Switzerland Sat. 6/7/24 5PM BBC1HD Live

A caller to TalkSport radio from Germany where he and his mates have been to all 5 England games described the experience …,

Well we are just doing enough to win games but it’s not exactly enjoyable - it feels like we’re dragging a corpse around !!

I reckon he nailed it !!!

I dread each game now - partly because we are so bad to watch ( bearing in mind by default I just watch teams who are pleasing on the eye like Barca, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs) - England are turgid at best !

Also there’s the the added stress of wanting him to play the more gifted players like TAA and Palmer plus being desperate for us to win knowing that it will keep Southgate in a job !!

Aghhhh!!!

its more luck than something else LOL, also my choice of foreign manager is a good one though, Galtier is a quality manager who also looks more at the team than big name stars (he even benched Messi, Neymar at PSG)

Swiss had bad luck with Akanji's horribly taken penalty (and that plays for Man City can you imagine)

the penalty strategic subs for Switzerland were done properly by Yakin, yet also not giving up on the match to try and finish it in extra time

Swiss played an excellent tournament to get this far to quarter finals

France have played three of the seven highest-ranked countries in world football. The
Swiss, rated 19th in the world, are the highest ranked England have played so far.

Well here's a team of players that Sven had during his reign.

David Seaman
Gary Neville
Rio Ferdinand
John Terry
Ashley Cole
David Beckham
Steven Gerrard
Paul Scholes
Frank Lampard
Wayne Rooney
Michael Owen

Didn't advance any further than the quater finals.

All big teams struggled against the more organised smaller teams..ie, the Slovs, and the swiss Turks etc
.

The only small team that didnt look well organised was us, unfortunately. Thank god we didnt make it through, cause we would have bored the watching world.

Was a tad drunk last night....but did I really see Ivan Toney, take a blind penalty in a quarter final of a euro championship. Now that itself deserves some ball grabbing.

Well Sven's team had the Destroyer Of Championship Clubs, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes (at points) Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Ashley Cole, and Gary Neville.

Admittedly our goalkeeper situation is much better nowadays.

I'm not saying that Southgate is a perfect Manager (I don't believe that exists anyway) but he is a huge step up on some of the Managers that we've had over the years.

I mean who remembers Steve McClaren's reign?

And Switzerland had at this tournament what we ironically used to do under Sven, decent performances on average that gets knocked out at the Quarters.

Not one French player has scored in open play, where as three England players have (two of them multiple times.)

If France were to win this Euros it would be a laughing stock, as they can't do the most important part of the Sport which is to score goals.

don't trash the LEGEND OF ENSCHEDE

also hope Germany won't sack Nagelsmann because losing to Spain in extra time was just bad luck, and he is a good manager for them, just the likes of Neuer, Muller, Gundogan that need to retire from the national team and new talent to step up

Steve McClaren was a good Manager tbf... Just not with England for some reason.

And I don't think that Germany will sack Nagelsmann, they've had their best performances in years in this tournament.

Indeed and people forget that most good managers don't want to manage at international level, they'd much rather be in club football. So the idea that we'd replace Southgate with some managerial genius is for the birds

England are not in the semis because of Safegate

They are there in spite of him

Notice England only start to play football when they go down a goal and then they forget about the "tactics" and rely on their own skills and knowledge of football

We all knew that england had a fantastic squad going into this tournament and it has shown through. Every single player is capable of a game changing moment of brilliance.

They went behind in the last 2 games. Both times, they then forgot entirely about tactic and played for their individual pride and thats why they won. They were never in danger of losing that penalty shoot out yesterday

Southgate has built the culture of players being able to handle the big moments and show resilience when going behind or facing adversity

We are no longer the team of bottlers that we used to be

That is a very good point imo.

Most of the best Managers are in club Football.

And some people do want to be careful what they wish for, we could end up with Steven Gerrard as our next Manager.

Agree, when they throw GS tactics out the window, they finally look like a team.

England have equalised in the last two games with two of the best goals of the tournament.

It hasnt been thru teamplay, pressing the opponents etc its the brilliance of the players that have won the games not the managers tactics.

I want England to win the tournament obviously but when the players are unable to score a great goal the exit is gonna look so lacklustre that I cant see much support for GS. Finally we'll et rid of him

England dont need a tactical genius they just need a manager who has some tactical ideas. GS doesnt have any.

Spain have played some really nice football in this tournament, so have the netherlands to be fair, but those type of teams never really end up winning the tournament
