Tbh the name "Dwight" suggests a toothless yokel who lives in a tunnel. Maybe that was the problem?

Tbf, the business in question does appear to be quite racist here.

Guy sounds like someone who’s experienced institutional racism, something you’ll never understand in this lifetime.

Why does institutional racism, no matter the context or title of job, hurt so much? Do you people actually hear yourselves?

The point I was questioning is ... it's a hotel. Why apply multiple times, including under a fake name?

You have this kind of privilege that loves perpetual debate, even when it’s not appropriate. I don’t even know what to say to you to be honest.

How'd you mean? I was agreeing that all forms of racism are wrong.

Too much assurance in white male privilege, conscious or unconscious, can block you from seeing the full truth and that’s a fact. You’re nowhere near as bad as LT (who deliberately baits and puts a racist narrative on everything involving people of colour) but you do make blunders. You might not be able to see it but that’s kinda the point. Always naively looking for a debate, at whatever cost, no-matter who you subconsciously trample on in the process. It’s very bad.

…this is t at all about interview performance…it’s about a name change that was implemented to a ‘more white sounding name’ which then gave him an interview opportunity with all other details exactly the same as his original application…/hence the discrimination lawsuit that he’s planning or has filed…

Isn’t the thread about him changing his name TO GET an interview?

I wouldn't have thought Dwight was a black sounding name either, like Oliver i would have pictured a white country guy, maybe it's with Jackson as a surname though?

Jackson is reliably found among the top twenty last names in the U.S.
According to WorldNames public profiler, the Jackson surname is found in the greatest numbers in the U.K. and Australia. It is most prevalent in northern England, especially Cumbria county. --------- There is no way you could prove that the recruiter thought "Dwight Jackson, oh yeah the guy must be black with that name and as a racist I will not give him an interview" crazy |

I mean, if everything he's said is correct (which I'm sure he'll have to back up in his law suit) I would say there's more evidence to say he's right and his name change made the difference. I don't know whether they thought he was black or whether they thought he was "white trash" but either way it's discrimination because of his name.

…I don’t know about surnames but I just found a site that lists some names and their origins…and it is specific to ‘black children chosen names…’…
…anyway, Dwight is listed as a chosen name for male black children…its origin/meaning…. Meaning: “Little and dark” Origin: Irish Cultural Significance: Represents the beauty and strength found in diversity. …its only one site, I’m aware…but its helpful for us to understand why a name might be looked at with discrimination if this case goes through the legal system etc… Last edited by Ammi; 15-07-2024 at 12:00 PM. |
