Always thought it was strange that Britain preferred Friends to Seinfeld, given how we make such a big deal over us supposedly preferring darker, more cynical humour. And Seinfeld is unarguably a darker, more cynical show than Friends could ever be. My theory has always been that a large part of the appeal of Friends, that almost always goes unsaid, is that people liked to live vicariously through the romantic exploits of this group of physically attractive young people who are living in and around a beautfiful studio apartment in New York. That's my half-assed cope of an explanation.

Seinfeld is way more grubby and realistic.
