they usually have teams of 4 or more that do stints of 6-12 months, so while it may seem like a big deal, it's really not

Yeah I keep seeing reporting of this that seems like it's saying she's going to be unexpectedly totally stranded up there alone for several months but that's really not the case - hers was meant to be a brief stay, but there are other people up there too on long stays, it's manned at all times. There are regularly scheduled arrivals and departures and "in emergency" they can get them all down if it was to come to that.
