No I don't think he did envy the success of others, I think if anything he just wishes he could go back to being a 'normal person'.

Fame came at a huge cost and he pretty much said this on a podcast he did with Steven Bartlett.
He definitely envied the others. He release flop after flop. He went to see Niall in concert and was doing a weird unauthorised meet and greet with his fans outside the venue. Security had to tell him to stop. Compare that to Harry Styles who also went to support Niall but chose to do so in a private room as to not try to steal his thunder so to speak.
