This reminds me of a time that did kind of happen to me.

When I was responsible for the temp desk ar work. I had a candidate who rang in one day in tears to say she wouldn't be in as her Dad had died. I consoled her and passed in my condolences and asked if it was sudden as she had not had any time off work. She said they'd had a lovely day on the beach that day but he had taken ill when they got home and passed away.

I went out, bought a card and posted it and then rang the client she was working for. They were very shocked and said it was so sad as she'd rung them earlier to say her DOG had died.

I then had ti ring her back and tell her that I had obviously misheard her and had sent a card in sympathy at the loss of her dad
