Someone told me their husband David had died and I thought they meant my housemate David who was actually asleep in the next room just a bit under the weather

Caused a right scene

This reminds me of a time that did kind of happen to me.

When I was responsible for the temp desk ar work. I had a candidate who rang in one day in tears to say she wouldn't be in as her Dad had died. I consoled her and passed in my condolences and asked if it was sudden as she had not had any time off work. She said they'd had a lovely day on the beach that day but he had taken ill when they got home and passed away.

I went out, bought a card and posted it and then rang the client she was working for. They were very shocked and said it was so sad as she'd rung them earlier to say her DOG had died.

I then had ti ring her back and tell her that I had obviously misheard her and had sent a card in sympathy at the loss of her dad

It's not really bad, but...

When I was working in Argos, an older lady said something about a colleague, he was Polish and she was worried he'd be deported due to Brexit (lol).
I asked how long he'd been working here, and she said about 20 years.
I was utterly flabbergasted, because he was clearly about 23. I said he must have been working here while in infant school.
The lady looked like her day was made, she was over the moon!

She'd misheard me and thought I'd asked how long she had been working there, and that I thought she was way too young to have worked there for two decades

Not so much a misunderstanding as a regret. I’d do anything to go back to the living arrangements of November 2021 to July 2022. I don’t think I fully understood at the time how good a comeback it was, despite minor annoyances.
