To have some compassion for the girl though: from what I've read I think she may well genuinely believe it to be true. I don't think it IS true, but I think she's got stuck on the idea and can't let it go. Probably some sort of trauma; or maybe some unpleasant individual even deliberately convinced her it was true.
It reminds me of the episode of Catfish where the guy thought he had been in an online relationship for months with Katy Perry... and no matter how much evidence they provided to him that he had not, in fact, been talking to Katy Perry... he still wouldn't fully believe it.
