Yes, it's just a character. But why did BB make the distinction? Danny is a man, and uses 'he' as a pronoun.
In or out of character, using 'he' is fine and acceptable. Do you agree?
As I say, what actually happened would be the same as BB suggesting that people treat Spit the Dog like a real dog while Carolgees was operating him. We would all think that was really odd, right?
