I compare it against snapshots when I graduated and then 15 years after that, and the world had flowered and the majority of peoples lives had really improved for the better.

Yes and more and more people now don't even have any comparator to a better time - this is all they've ever known. Massive divisions, limited opportunities, constant instability, normalisation of extremes of every kind etc. It's a reminder that the world doesn't just track along a linear scale of improvement and sometimes things get worse rather than better
