If I'm honest, I think that's your own bias in coming to that conclusion. Broadcast media used to self-censor within very reasonable limits. Late night never used to go out of its way to insult half its market. In fact, late night used to be one of the safer options for avoiding dealing with the more difficult aspects of tough news topics so while yes, it was comedy, but it was very tasteful comedy within the tolerances of most Americans. Our media used to also sanitize certain material out when importing from other markets (across the world), including things that came out of the BBC. In the past decade or so a lot of that has changed to see what could be gotten through, so if anything, it's the media testing the boundaries.
