Default Labour U-turns on farmer inheritance tax

Just went live on news

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8e9n3y28g1o

[Labour U-turns on farmer inheritance tax
The Labour government has announced
a significant U-turn on its previous
policy regarding inheritance tax for farmers.
The Department for the Environment,
Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
has raised the threshold at
which farming estates will be affected
by inheritance tax from
£1m to £2.5m. This change
means that the number of estates
expected to be affected has fallen
from 375 to 185.
The new policy also allows spouses
and civil partners to pass on estates
and agricultural assets worth up
to £5m before paying tax.
This decision has been met with
relief from many farmers,
who had been protesting against
the original policy,
which they believed would put
some farms out of business.
The changes reflect a shift
in the government's approach
to tax policy, aiming to protect
more ordinary family farms
while still supporting the
agricultural sector.]

Shows two things I think - firstly that it was a needless policy, it clearly did more harm to ordinary farmers than they first realised, and the cost of reversing it was lower than the damage being done by inflicting this cruel policy

Secondly that protest is still a very powerful tool, raising awareness through every means possible and continuing that protest tirelessly even when the government thinks you should have given up and just accepted it long ago. Well done to all the farmers and campaigners who will sleep a bit more soundly now this Christmas

Starmer is just trying to save himself, he wouldn't care about reversing these policies if he was safe, great win for the farmers, the pensioners, anyone with 2 kids plus...who is next

this wouldn't have happened if the government weren't caught lying about the state of the economy before the budget. Add to that the fact that farmers would all just move over to reform and it was a no brainer

I guess it would be petty of me to not say this is a welcome move.

No doubt Farmers will still be moaning about it though along with near everything else they've moaned and complained about decade after decade.

The tax felt like an echo of the Feudal System: "thank you, Serf, for working yourself into the grave to feed the country. Now you're dead, the government will take a big chunk of your money."

When you've got people dressed as Smurfs shouting you're a wanker, things are bad.
