…a public use building made entirely from wood and only one narrow exit…?…a terrifying notion and decision that has become an horrific reality for so many lives…

“Eyewitnesses speaking to French broadcaster BFM TV said that a barmaid, carried on the shoulders of a barman, held a lit sparkler that set fire to the wooden ceiling.”

i know in my childhood, sparklers were considered a safe indoor firework. I wouldn't dream of lighting one indoors these days

…from a CNN article…

Two witnesses have told CNN affiliate BFMTV that the deadly fire in Crans-Montana was caused by sparklers placed in champagne bottles.

“There were waitresses carrying champagne bottles with sparklers on them, and they carried them close to the ceiling, which caused it to catch fire,” one witness said.

“One waitress was standing on another waiter’s shoulders, and the bottle and the flames were just a few centimeters away from the ceiling,” the other added.

“Once the ceiling was on fire, within about ten seconds the entire nightclub was on fire,” the first witness said. “We all ran out screaming and when we turned back, there were flames.”

Both witnesses told the French network that there were at least 200 people inside the establishment.

…and most are very young, the reports are stating…

200 people, largely aged between 15 to 20-years-old. Panicked parents were seen rushing to the bar to see if their children were inside.

The victims have not yet been identified due to the severe burns, officials said. Foreign tourists are expected to be among the dead.

I saw pictures of that and I was like drunk people and fireworks. Yeah, this is dumb. I'd been long gone from that place.

I'm a outlier maybe, but my mind really doesn't. There are just too many people who are into doing things just because it is extra risky.

Terrorism is still rare, thankfully, but stupidity, unfortunately, is still not.

It's always all fun and games until it isn't. 99 times out of 100 (maybe 999 out of 1000) you'll do this and it'll all go fine, everyone will go on about what a great night it was and anyone complaining about health and safety is just a killjoy. It brings home the importance of having all those measures though which people often criticise as too much red tape

London has changed, because of the threat of terrorism. Westminster Bridge now has large bollards along it after a jihadi drove at speed into pedestrians killing five on the bridge then stabbed a policeman to death outside the Parliament. Five people were stabbed, two fatally on London Bridge by Jihadis. 7/7 bombs on a bus and in the London Underground. Soldier stabbed and beheaded outside Woolwich barracks in South London. Just a selection of a few incidents taken from many, it's not so rare in London.
