Default Another young man takes his life

Why are so many young men taking their young lives
Just found out a 20 something year old has hung himself

Can we all just ask young people when we are in their company are they ok?
Have they got any fears or worries?

Is this someone you knew @thesheriff443 ? . There seems to be a lot of young people struggling these days unfortunately with their mental health, it's very sad to see.

Social media plays a big part, and it's true that more people should check in on others ,and see if they're ok . Proper Communication is lacking , there's a bit more awareness but It could be better.

Yes, some very worrying statistics.

Just before Xmas my local road was closed as a 20 something yr old, fresh from a break up that morning with his partner decided to douse his car in petrol and drive head first into a tree at 100 plus miles per hour...Of all the ways to do it he chose that way.

Its not linked to drug abuse is it ??

A mate of our sons smoked cannabis ( took no other drugs) and ended up being scared to leave his house

He was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic months before he jumped off a motorway bridge

It’s mainly toxic masculinity. Men are taught that vulnerability is weakness.

Cricket can wreck havoc mentally. You spend days away from home (weeks if you're an international) for games and for so much of it you're not actually doing anything. You can play a 4/5 day game and your own contribution can last a few minutes if you're a struggling batsman. A game can also be won and lost by one slip up that everyone will remember. Crickets live in their own heads a lot. Plus they drink a lot which can be problematic in the long run

This is awful, I'm very sorry to hear it.

I have hope that as the stigma of men being able to talk about their feelings, and the stigma of people attending therapy (something everyone should do if possible) continues to wear off, that suicide with each passing generation will lower. In the UK by far the largest cohort of victims of male suicide sit in the 45-54 group, which is no surprise really. I know there is a lot of conversation a rise in younger men committing suicide and social media and intel culture have a lot of answer for in that regard I believe.

Thing is suicide rates were a lot lower decades ago and it was much less common then for men to openly discuss their feelings or attend therapy so I think it's a lot more complicated than that

There is no denying it's a complex issue, but the rates are higher amongst older generations who were raised to not discuss feelings, with the rhetoric therapy for just for the mentally ill - life gets way more stressful in your 30s, 40s, 50s as responsibility increases, monetary issues arise, potential health issues with you or family, raising children, etc... if they grew up with little allowance to be emotionally available, discuss feelings in an open way and also through formal channels without feeling ashamed then I would say that's significant contributing factor.

It's more common for men to talk about their feelings now but the large majority of that will be normalised within younger men.

I wouldn't be surprised if in 30 years time we see a decrease in suicide rates in men mid-40s to 60s etc... because they grew up with more freedom to process emotion on a healthier level.
