Today, Keir Starmer met with business leaders in Downing Street to discuss the impact of the Iran war on the UK economy. The meeting included senior representatives from the energy, shipping, and financial services sectors, focusing on the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the implications for oil prices and household costs. Starmer emphasized the need for a joint effort between the government and the private sector to address rising energy, fuel, and food prices, as well as to protect British interests amid geopolitical tensions.
err joint usually means both, what exactly are the government doing, apart from monitoring price hikes and droning on about 150 quid off energy bills which has not materialised and putting fuel duty up in September

James Murray Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in response to questioning as to what the government were doing to help the situation said the fuel duty has been frozen until September and there is a fuel tracker website which will save motorists 40.00 a year if they use it

Rachel Reeves is under growing pressure to help desperate drivers today as it emerged the government is in line for an Ł8billion windfall from soaring energy prices.
The Chancellor is still refusing to follow a host of countries including Australia, Spain and Poland in trimming duty on fuel at the pumps in response to Middle East chaos. But while surging oil costs have left motorists paying more than Ł1.80 for a litre of diesel and Ł1.52 for petrol, the Treasury is believed to be seeing a Ł20million a day boost to revenues. That is from a combination of higher VAT income on fuel, the levy on North Sea profits, and 'excess profit' taxes on power generators. Although debt interest payments are increasing, higher inflation is also expected to ramp up the income tax take. Millions of Brits will be dragged deeper into the system by pay increases, after Ms Reeves froze tax thresholds until 2031. The estimates come as Keir Starmer hosts another Cobra emergency meeting over the looming hit from the Iran crisis. The Tories have insisted he needs to take action instead of holding more talks. Donald Trump has apparently told aides he is considering ending his military campaign even if Tehran does not reopen the critical Strait of Hormuz - through which around a fifth of the world's oil supplies normally pass. the problem is that the issue will spread out to many items, not just fuel and energy. I also don't think Trump walking away will end the issues both to the strait and Iran's neighbours.

of course, I just cant believe the government cant see how rising fuel costs wont impact on everything, holding endless meetings to discuss it is just nonsense and everyone can see it, people need action not plump bottoms as someone described them this morning sitting around discussing it

i actually remember the last time everything went crazy in the 70's. The price of petrol shot up and it never came down again and I don't expect it to be any different this time
