Default A thread for what other countries are doing to help during the fuel price hike

Several countries, including Ireland, Albania, Sweden, Spain, Italy, and Brazil, have recently cut fuel duties or taxes to ease the impact of rising global fuel prices.
Europe
Ireland plans to cut excise duty on petrol by 15 cents per litre and diesel by 20 cents per litre as part of a €235 million package, including rebates for hauliers and home heating assistance, effective until the end of May 2026.
2
Albania has reduced fuel excise duty by 20%, capping petrol and diesel prices to mitigate the effects of Middle East supply disruptions.
1
Sweden will temporarily lower fuel taxes by 1 krona per litre for petrol and 0.4 krona per litre for diesel from May 1 to September 30, 2026, aiming to offset inflationary pressures from the Iran war.
1
Spain has cut VAT on fuel from 21% to 10% and suspended the hydrocarbon excise duty, reducing petrol and diesel prices by 0.30–0.40 euros per litre.
1
Italy has introduced temporary excise duty reductions of 25 cents per litre on fuels to cushion consumers from rising prices.

Germany is considering measures to support consumers, including potential fuel tax relief, though details are still under discussion.

Other Regions
Brazil has announced temporary measures to limit fuel price increases, including suspending taxes on diesel fuel.
1
Portugal has implemented similar VAT reductions on fuel to reduce costs for consumers.

I like to call it the Chinese flu if we're calling a spade a spade. I honestly don't think this crisis could make the whipping Labour is going to get at the next election any worse or any more humiliating for them.

The only advice is not to panic buy fuel, yeah just wait to top up until its price is even higher next week

I love seeing the creativity of policy making in other countries compared to our government which can never do anything different or think outside the box. We did for a little bit during Covid but otherwise we just plod on with tiny tweaks here and there and otherwise acting terrified of any meaningful policy decision. You often find in Eastern Europe that the countries are obviously poorer but they have better public transport systems and they actually try interesting new ideas to improve the quality of life for their citizens. Like in Romania you could ride the bus for free if you do twenty squats first which is brilliant

i never thought I would say this but I think we were lucky that the Tories were in power during Covid, I dont think Starmer or Reeves would have rolled out Furlough, Reeves first budget has lost 30,000 hospitality jobs already and probably many more will go as people wont want to go out to eat or have it delivered dur to the extra costs involved

Agreed and something like eat out to to help out was a genuinely creative policy and it was a real lifeline to the hospitality industry making people want to use pubs and restaurants again. Those places would have just died otherwise. People can be scornful of it now saying it increased covid cases but I'm sceptical over whether that wouldn't have happened anyway

Keir Starmer will meet senior bosses from energy, shipping and financial services later in Downing Street about the impact of the Iran war on the UK economy.

Talks are expected to centre around Iran's effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest channels for oil and other products, including fertiliser.

The PM's office said the aim of the meeting was to hear directly from businesses and discuss how the government and private sector can work together.

The leaders will also hear an update on the situation in the region from UK maritime operations commander Major General Richard Cantrill.
