A perfectly acceptable reason - he deserved it.

Is a difficult one - but as your situation shows - there are times when it is justified.

So I would say in principle, no - but it depends. A woman slapping a man is not the same though as a man slapping a woman - because of the imbalance in physical strenth and size.
