Default No surprise as Celtic fans did not observe minutes silence

They sang all the way through, some of them, but that is all you could hear on Radio Scotland - horrible republican songs too. last year they avoided this by having a minutes applause and lied about why.

Celtic are a disgrace.

Do you not think that it merits discussion, why should they get away with that?

Don't know a thing about football! Just passing comment on the fact that you make an awful lot of controversial threads - often starting them off in quite a provocative manner.

It was a disgrace. I'm anti-celtic, though - so I shall try and post without the bias!

Fact is, most of them (80%) are fully thoroughbred Scottish. It's a Scottish club, not Irish. Therefore most of them had family fighting in the World Wars anyway. To do this is completely disrespecting their own ancestors, it's sickening. Secondly, the 20% that are ROI... ROI still honor Remembrance Day too. I don't know why they think they're above the law.

The video starts off with a small minority singing Republican songs but gradually a lot of crowd join in. I'm friends with a Celtic fan and they wouldn't dream of doing this, so I can only imagine that people bought tickets to that match specifically to cause trouble.

Absolutely, well, some more than others - typically big clubs or clubs that have had sudden turn around in fortunes [see : Chelsea].

While I don't agree with the silly chanting that went on during the minutes silence, I do have a problem with the governments politicising of an event by turning it into a public relations campaign in an effort to gain public support for the illegitimate wars that they have been involved in recently. You're always going to run the risk of a reaction when you force it on people during a football game, particularly when it involves a team like Celtic who have a long history and association with Ireland's plight against British occupation.... you're playing with fire in a situation like that.

Well said. It's a bit like Harold & Kumar expecting to get a standing ovation at a BNP rally.

And it is indeed a public relations campaign also. Nobody wants to look out of line, but lets face it, whilst they have my sympathy, soldiers died in Afghanistan because they signed up to be a soldier. Just like suicide, it's a very unfair thing to those who love you, because you run the risk of, I don't know, say being shot in the head.

Of course people still get brainwashed into it because they believe you are fighting for the 'honor' and 'dignity' of your country. Let others take care of it and serve your country in a real way, instead of being a tool of a military operation even those running it cant understand.

Nobody is denying the Celtic fans showed a complete lack of decency, I think the point being made was surely everyone involved beforehand knew it was going to happen.

It's what the British army represents for Celtic football club and with Catholics/Irish in general that's the problem here. There was always going to be a reaction however illjudged it inevitably was.

Exactly.

You have to appreciate there is a conflict of interest with remembrance day as you are remembering an army that inevitably did do, amongst other things, rape, beat and kill Irish people for quiet a number of years. I know the Irish also fought in both World War's with the British but that's a whole different story.
