And manufactured doesn't always mean generic, just see Elvis for that. And 'actual artist' doesn't equal good.

The bottom line is, it depends how it sounds. If its good it will sell, if its crap it won't sell. And you mention The Cribs, now it all makes sense why they sound so bitter, because they're crap and hardly ever break the top 20.
