Default What was before the Big Bang?

So the universe sure does look like it is exploding out of something but what was there before the bang?

Finest mystery of our time. I don't think we will ever know. I think this whole thing is greater than our minds are capable of understanding.

Goddidit, of course.

You know the big bang theory does not attempt to describe the initial conditions or first cause of the universe, right? It is intended merely to describe the development of the universe from its extremely dense and hot early stages into its present form. Don't think of it as a localized explosion from which all matter moves away, but as an expansion of space itself. An observer at any point in the universe sees the same thing: a homogenous distribution of matter everywhere, with the more and more distant parts receding faster and faster.

Of course one explanation is that a multiverse existed before everything. The problem with the god hypothesis is that it calls into question who created the creator, a paradox that continues ad infinitum.

How does God exist?

we learned that everything has a creator, right?

So how did he come into existence?

Presumably from a religious standpoint he either always existed or simply magicked himself into existence. The thing is, science is always at a certain disadvantage in debates like these because a religious person can get away with saying virtually anything by saying 'His God! That's how!'.

He doesn't travel much to spread the word for the son of a superbeing, does he? His initial visit to our world left a lot to be desired.

I blame the Romans, or the Italians as they are now. His first visit had more impact than any "man" who has ever lived so i reckon he hi-fived a few Angels on his ascent.

The universe could not have popped into existence uncaused, out of absolutely nothing, because we know that whatever begins to exist has a cause.

Time began with the Big Bang so there was no before.

...I know, I can't really get my head around that either.

We only think things have to have a cause because thats what we're used to. The world doesn't have to have had a start point, its a hard concept to get your head around but thats only because of human nature.

But hang on, don't you believe in God ...?

It depends on how you see God. The Bible communicates God's creative and sustaining relationship to the cosmos rather than his physical location within the cosmos. It would be hard with current scientific language to deal with that I know.

Its a bit like seeing Genesis as a recipe for making universes, which it is not (for a start you would need a lot more eggs).

Physical location or not, that's why I mentioned it as an abstract concept, 'God' would have to have a start point just like everything else. That is if you believe in start points. Another theory is that when this universe contracts, it will once again expand into another big bang, only for the same thing to happen again. Who says the universe 'began'? It could be just on a constant loop.
