Makes you think how much China could change our way of life when they become the world's foremost superpower. Imagine Mahjong becoming the UK's number 1 favourite family game.

Guess not enough effort is being made to preserve it, plus all the different dialects, there is that nationally recognised Irish, but people prefer to speak it the way they were taught.

Yeah, there are a few areas around Ireland especially around Galway that still speak it all the time, I would love to be more fluent in it but Languages aren't my strong point. My daughter loves it and has a great flair for it though so I'm delighted about that.

Are kids interested in it though, like in general? From whom i've talked to most don't really bother with it and find it a annoyance to learn.

Not really but she just loves it which is great. Her teacher is from a Gealtacht area in Kerry so she's delighted with her. But in general I don't think kids are that bothered with it.

It's quite big in America though i've heard. I even used to learn it at an Irish Club. It's a shame the kids aren't bothered though, I think it's one of the oldest languages in Europe or something. The Welsh have kept theirs very well.

Yeah, it is a shame, I think maybe the way it's taught in school could be changed a bit. This teacher that my daughter has now was also her teacher in her first year of school and she taught them alot through Irish and gave a very good base which I think made a big difference

Indeed, hopefully they start soon or it will be too late.

In Scotland Gaelic is taught widely in the highlands. Not necessarily to be spoken but to understand the landscape. Most of the scenery has Gaelic names, especially hills, mountains, rivers, valleys etc. without a good grounding in Gaelic you would be lost in your own country. I would imagine ditto in Ireland.

Yeah, I mean I know the basics cos we learn it all the way through school, but I wouldn't say I'm fluent and definately more effort in the way it's taught in school would help.

I think they have brought a lot more god, than evil honestly!
I am not American originally, but seriously, the American people, are good people. I would recommend anybody to go and experience it for a while. NOt the regular stereotypical stuff, but go there and live in some average american town for a bit, and you will realise how comfortable they make you feel, for the most part.
I am from Africa, and we are welcoming, but we are very judgemental. IVe been in Europe, and they deffinitely just never make me feel like I am welcome.

Its the only place I have ever gon too, and almost immediately, felt like I could easily be one of the many!
Just my honest testament.

I'm fluent baby. Went to an all Irish primary and secondary school. Bit rusty but it's like riding a bike.

That's the only way to really learn it properly I think. I wish I knew it better

It's the only way to learn any language as far as I'm concerned - total immersion. Why don't you buy some audio cds or something?

I don't have the time, patience or energy for it!! If I was going to try and learn a language it would be Spanish as I actually need to learn that!

I make the same excuses for not learning Italian properly but in reality you don't have to sacrifice too much time or energy. It's just a case of pressing play and being attentive. Could even do it while on the pc at home.
