Default I'm so happy Avatar didn't win 'Best Film'

I just read that Avatar didn't win Best Film at BAFTA's and I'm delighted. Yes - visually is was good, and it deserved it's award for 'Special Visual Effects', but a film is more than how it looks on screen. Avatar's story was good/meh at best. I hate the hype around it.

I'm not happy; I'm absolutely ecstatic that that big dumb film was overlooked by the Baftas except for the two awards - production design and special effects- that it actually deserved.

It's not like it was ever favourite to win though. It is at the Oscars, but certainly not the BAFTA's. Plus it was never made with intention of winning awards, it was "made for the box office" (words straight from James Cameron's mouth) - which it has obviously succeeded. The fact that it was even nominated for such prestigious awards is a triumph in itself.

Not really. They're giving it nominations because of the fact it's putting bums on seats and they missed the boat last year with The Dark Knight. And don't forget that they did the same with Titanic when it was setting the box office alight, crowing it with the Best Film Oscar while La Confidential was left hanging. Crazy.

The whole 'bums on seats' argument was decided by nominating 10 films instead of 5. Avatar would have been nominated either way. It's only the films like Up, The Blind Side and District 9 who have benefitted from this, so you can hardly use that as an excuse for it being nominated in the first place.

As for LA Confidential - to each his own, I suppose.

This film is a piece of crap. It's so overhyped and overrated.

I love Avatar, both the story and visuals, infact I prefered the story to the visuals.

Well, in terms of revenue Avatar would be far exceeding any of the other films you've mentioned but yes, they've probably implemented this new silly 10 nominations system in an effort to broaden the appeal of the Oscars, but I for one hope that this ploy for viewing figures doesn't extend so far as to award Cameron's film with the Best Picture award with so many other far more deserving winners, including two of the three films you've already mentioned.

And yeah, LA Confidential was robbed big time.

I'll drink to that. Did anyone else roll their eyes when that special effects guy from Avatar started going on about how the planet in Avatar is a little bit like the real world?

Words fail me here. Glad I missed that one. I mean, was that entirely necessary to say when the film itself rammed that particular point down our throats from beginning to end?
