You're completely missing the point- noone wanted to see death or destruction, but after all the hype people wanted to see something even if it was just a giant wave crashing into the side. It was meant to be a 3m wave at first- that would have caused almost no damage whatsoever to Hawaii- its a big mountain! Its not like the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami where many of the islands affected are at sea level.
