30 years ago the legends would freely party like mad, do cocaine, drink binges, get into fights - nowadays popstars wouldn't dream of doing **** like this. The only exception I can think of is Amy Winehouse.
In short: there's a lot less scope to stick out from the crowd and appear truly iconic and a huge character. As much as it pains me to say it - I think GaGa is the strongest candidate.

I guess the same could have been said about Britney at one time though, look what happened there. GaGa is a kooky dresser and makes catchy pop songs.
