Default Should Facebook be more tightly regulated

Should Facebook be more tightly regulated to prevent naive youngsters from giving too many personal details out about themselves. Youngsters tend to be too trusting and automatically take people at their word. For their own protection - should security improve.

The recent case of Ashley Hall bears this out - that in this day and age it is better to be overly suspicious than too trusting. An unfortunate fact of life!

Facebook is ever changing / updating.

This was a sad case of a lonely girl tricked to her brutal Rape and Death.
It was the police that let him slip from their range.

Facebook is not to blame
You can set up Security on it.

I think perhaps when a younger user creates an account there should be some security options in place automatically, kinda like with Xbox Live. That way it doesn't bother the older users who'd get annoyed by the safety features and the kids are protected from online threats.

Idea; for a under 13 account it needs an adult to agree to the account and an adult to agree to friend requests

There should be some control about adults using sites that minors use

It should, but the kid needs to have a little common sense, i'm sure every kid has heard of internet horror stories. If I was ever too meet someone off the net. i'd want to see them on webcam, talk to them on the phone these days. Kids are warned at an early age to be aware of the net. You will get some cases where the kids are unfortunately lured to their death, but more than not, the kid will pick up there is something wrong pretty quick.

Parents have the biggest responsibility here to know what their kids are doing on the net, I mean an age limit is all well and good but there is no way of making sure the person is over whatever age limit is set.

Keep kids off the internet I say, they should be out playing, exercising so they dont become obese. Making friends in a real world situation. Developing social skills.

If parents know that their child is too trusting, then the parent should supervise the child's net use. Not expect the net to become a nanny for them.

exactly, My daughter is almost 10 and there's no way I'd allow her go on Facebook, her friends from school are all on this Moshi Monsters thing which I've let her do but only when I'm sitting next to her for 15 minutes a day.

To be quite honest, anyone that would put their home address or mobile number/landline number on a social networking site, is just plain ****ing stupid.

I think the most I've ever given is my school, which I've now removed. Aside from that, nothing too major, just the county I live in etc.

Other people shouldn't have to suffer for the stupidity and naivity of others, nor should a collective group of people, i.e under 18's.

A lot of youngsters simply don't see the danger - and that is frightening! It doesn't make them stupid, just a little naive - and they don't deserve something awful happening because of it.
I understand all of that but others shouldn't have to suffer. What needs improving is information and education regarding internet use. Warnings on the site itself would suffice even!

Yes it is a valid point point you have. Parents though should ensure their childrens safety. First and Foremost.

If you believe that Facebook etc are dangerous, then its your duty as a parent not to allow your children to use it until it has been sorted to your satisfaction.

If one of their friends, an older one came round with a clapped out car that obviously shouldnt be on the road, would you let your child go out for a spin in it?

Not just kids at risk is it!!!!!! Todays news guy sentenced to life for murdering his girlfriend he saw with some one else on face book.......

Indirectly face book and the like will lead to many deaths over time.......

I wish people would learn that privacy is far safer than putting yourself up for grabs.......

Yes parents bear responsibility, but shouldn't websites too! Surely even one dead girl, and there have been other internet related ones, is too many! It is alright saying parents should this, kids should that, but surely internet providers should take more responsibility too ie if a youngster, and ages should be verified, gives out personal information - it should be removed and the user warned that account will be removed if they do so again.
Yeah, I haven't had a teenager yet but having been a teenager myself I take your point!

I'm not easily shocked but when I see a 8 y-o girl/boy being on Facebook, there is something wrong. I believe that Facebook shouldn't be taken seriously, it's just for fun, but there are and always be some people who take it seriously. Facebook is the world's leader in relationships/friendships breaker, as many people would call it.

Think yourself lucky it was only a ten year old. You could have been poked by a 30 odd year old man.
