Default Immortality

If you were given the chance of becoming immortal, meaning never being able to die, would you take the opportunity or not, and why? You would not be able to reverse the effect if you chose to.

No.

I'd rather die than grow old and loose my family and go on to live forever, i'd get lonely and bored.

It'd probably be more fun up in heaven having a rave with your friends and family that have died, than sitting in a rocking chair aged 4000.

No. Think about it, you would eventually start to go insane after a certain amount of time. Your brain just can't process the idea of life and progression forever without doing a nut in. In a strange way we ... well ... we need death. It gives us a reason to live. To do stuff. Make stuff happen. Give ourselves closure. A human brain cannot cope with everliving.

Probably would yeah would be intresting to see how technology and that devolops.

It'd also be a big smack in the face to God if he decided to end the world, while everyone else is dieing I could just be standing there like since I cant die..

Then I'd build my own world and name myself God and that.

Would be amazing.

But it would be a shame if your close friends/family died although I'd bring a few mates along to be my followers and slaves.

I would hate to live forever. One of the good things about this life is that there is a way out. It'd be horribe to be stuck here.

I think Im with Stu, I couldnt bare keep making close bonds with people but not being able to grow old with them and constantly having to make new relationships and watching people die yet you just stick around. Id go nutty for a way out.

Although seeing how the world develops 1000's of years later, and what we are able to find out and how technology improves would be really interesting too.

It's not even just your close mates dying, it's just your mind would start to go batty after a certain amount of time. The human brain is like a hard drive. Overload it with more information than it can handle [See : Psychedelic experiences] and it starts to go nuts.

Living through eight or nine technological ages might sound glamarous, but I imagine it would drive the brain in to a deep state of doubt and depression.

No fecking way. See all the people you love die and be all alone and just having to go through that over and over again? It'd be awful.

I'd consider it but only if other people could be immortal with me, the idea of being alone forever is terrifying.

First of all we are assuming death is the end and that life is the greatest indulgence? [cue 500 other debates].

Thats a good point Dezzy, maybe if your family and friends could have it too it might sound more appealing. Though you'd still get bored eventually, but like, maybe in the future instead of visiting different countries you could visit a different planet, would be amazing.

I'd hate to grow older forever.. if that makes sense.

Re-heal magically.

That Hayden thread just reminded me that its a similar situation as her role as Claire in Heroes, except if shes stabbed in the back of the neck she will die but in this situation you wouldnt be able to.

And true Stu, there could be an afterlife where we live on anyway.....
