I had this happen when I was in my second year of uni. I wasn't really thinking, let him in to read the meter. I didn't ask for ID since he had a british gas jacket on, and a clip board. He seemed nice enough, and wasn't in for long.
To cut a long story short, the next week my house was burgled while I was out and loads of my things were stolen. I didn't click originally, but then it came to me that maybe he wasn't really a meter-checker, and he was just an imposter eyeing up the house for things to steal (xbox, laptops etc). The police told me to ring british gas to see if they had dispatched someone to read the meters the week before, so I rang them and they hadn't sent anyone. The police said its a fairly common scam for people like that, they just attach a british gas logo to their clothes to make it look legit.
Get you or your parents to ring and see if someone was meant to visit your house, the company will have a record of it if he was legit.
