I also personally hate their core message of 'don't think, don't do anything, just get drunk'.

The selling of God's power, if it exists, as just another intoxicant and to be used solely for personal ends seems a perverse twisting of the Bible to me.

- All churches try and appeal to the wider public

What makes Dave's church a "cult"?

Found this nice piece on Counterfeit religions;

Quote:
Counterfeit religions are also skilled at focusing their members’ attention on peripheral issues. They most often appeal to their emotions by talking about love and by getting people heavily involved in church-sponsored social events, or even missionary-type activities. If their members feel good about what they are doing, it makes little difference to them what they are being taught. Such people often remain loyal to a counterfeit church no matter what. Even when some are exposed as frauds, it doesn’t keep a loyal, but ignorant, few from continuing to support them.

Among those counterfeit churches that do study the Bible, many use only a small portion of it. They constantly refer to pet scriptures that can seem to support their beliefs. Often they have pulled these verses out of context and misinterpreted them, giving a far different impression than what the Bible actually means.

Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death” (Revised Standard Version).

What makes Dave's church a "cult"?
Quote:
In religion and sociology, a cult is a group of people devoted to beliefs and goals which are not held by the majority of society, often religious in nature. Its marginal status may come about either due to its novel belief system or due to idiosyncratic practices that cause the surrounding culture to regard it as far outside the mainstream.
It is a cult by definition.

It's like attempting to shout your opponent down - something people resort to when their argument is ineffective!

Nah ya flamingGalah, scraping the barrel is twisting his words and actions in order to take pops at him simply because you dont like his version of christianity.

This is true, but the word cult has picked up some Jonestown et al baggage since the term's become popular, and I don't know if I'd go so far as to call Dave's little group a cult. They still believe in Biblical creation, Jesus, salvation, and the afterlife, even the arbitrary moral codes against homosexuality etc. The verses they take out of context are the same ones every other evangelical group does. They just give it a "rocker" lingo, so "feeling the Holy Spirit" becomes "getting drunk on the Lord"...not seeing huge differences.

While they are organized under a charismatic leader, they don't seem to share other classic symptoms of a cult; most importantly, isolationism/fear of the mainstream. They're located in many countries, on youtube, and Dave being on this program alone makes me view the group a lot less "culty".

From an American perspective, groups like Dave's are a dime a dozen. They're mainstream Christian targeted at an alternative subgroup, in this case former rockers/druggies or those of a similar aesthetic. They make money in the most glaringly hypocritical ways, but so do the most established. Have you seen megachurches? I don't see the difference besides scale and musical preference.

Well judging him by what he does in the house - surely the best thing, as it's what we have best knowledge of - does he actually HURT anyone in there by his 'drunk' episodes?

I have changed my mind again on Dave, I am sorry to say that I have to retract my OP. I have done some reading and watch a few videos, and I have to say I don't like the man behind the BB face that he shows us, or what he stands for.

It's sad when a favourite HM turns out to be not what you thought they were

New favourite- Andrew!
