It was not the fact that he was middle aged, this whole thing was about the situation this afternoon, where 3 people where involved, not only Dave (the guy without personality is younger then Mario, even Josie is younger) but in that situation all 3 of them behaved like ass****les

But from what you said Dave followed him out and told him that he loved him while attempting to hug. It seems that he realised Mario was getting a bit upset and wanted him to know he was just messing around, so why is he being targeted here?

I think I have answered that already before. First he was calling him, but not in a way of being worried, he did the opposite and made a funny voice while doing it.
His excuses where never real, where never meant to make the other person feel better again, it was just an act of appease his conscience.
