Just how do you know christmas songs have not already been released this year that are on par with 'the greats'? I am going to assume you don't exactly dig deep for your musical kicks, and as many great artists neither have the money nor lucrative platform to push their songs to airplay - the ones that can even be bothered because as Zippy alluded to the X-Factor bores have scared off a lot of genuine competition from even bothering - how exactly are you comftorable with making such wide assumptions?
If a great was released? If? You hear what is sent directly to your musical inbox. Very little else. Plenty of better songs than Matt's [in name only, of course] 'effort' were released this year. It's just that most people will never have heard of them because most people don't look for music. Music finds them. That's not an indictment of people or pop more a nod to the way the industry - and it's consumers - work.
So please ... stop pretending Matt won because it was genuinly the best thing going. It wasn't. It was an event and people love events. They are more than happy to buy into it and feel that collective sense of victory when 'they' play a part in helping Matt 'overcome' or whatever other jubilant adjective you care to use.

How am I pretending? Matt won because people liked him,Matt is number one because people brought the record.People are not 'forced' to do anything.
