Egypt has always been unstable and in 2001 when I took my two sons there on holiday we saw armed soldiers everywhere. When we were in Aswan we went on an excursion to Abu Simbel which necessitated leaving at 4am - about an hour into the coach journey, the coach was stopped by soldiers and several boarded the coach and sat with the passengers. It was very intimidating sitting with two heavily armed soldiers right behind us, but the guide told us it was for our own protection against terrorists. There have been several terrorist attacks in Egypt over the past decade and many tourists have been killed, so it has never been the safest of destinations. |
