Philandering footballers on multi-million pound salaries can easily afford expensive lawyers to get them gagging orders.

Over the past year, one serial cheat, who is an international sportsman, won a court order to avoid being exposed for allegedly having affairs with two women.

There is also a millionaire footballer who obtained a ban on the reporting of his ‘sexual liaisons’ with a foreign female sports star.

A high-profile public figure who cheated on his wife was able to hush it up because he claimed it would be ‘very distressing’ for his family if it were made public.

England footballer John Terry was granted a superinjunction when he allegedly cheated on his wife with a team-mate’s former girlfriend, but the claim became public after a judge said he was trying to protect his sponsorship deals rather than his privacy.

In the past two years, privacy injunctions have been granted to seven footballers, ten film or television personalities and five pop stars, among others.

This has effectively created a privacy law, even though one has never been passed by Parliament.

Lawyers and media experts say the rulings which allow stars to keep their identities secret are a victory for the rich and famous who can afford to silence reporting and criticism of their sordid affairs.
