You may not like the term but no need to be offensive to those that do.

Plus, as someone else said R.I.P. isn't just a religious reference.
My nan's sister died a couple of weeks ago and for the last 20/30 years of her life suffered with terrible illnesses, constantly in and out of hospital, bed ridden for the last 4 years. So "Rest in Peace" is an apt sign of respect to someone who has been freed from any pain they were suffering.

And it's used as a part of the grieving process. It's hard to deal with losing a very closed loved one as it is without people like you ridiculing it and saying ridiculous things like "bulldoze graveyards".
The main reason for graveyards is for relatives to have somewhere to visit to remember them by and reflect on their life or feel close to them.

Did you like that discussion style?

Them being in churches... bit obvious.

I'm talking about people, regardless of whether their religious or not want a place to respect their dead loved ones and remember them.

And why is it so offensive to you that people use R.I.P? If you don't like it, don't bother with it. The world doesn't stop because you don't like something. It's like Christmas, some people like it and some don't but doesn't stop it occurring year after year.

I agree.

RIP - for the deceased and for those loved ones still on this earth. If a graveyard / cemetery, or a place of rememberance can't be in a place of peace, for the deceased to be paid respects, for quiet thoughts of rememberance and acknowledgement etc, then we've regressed beyond any help.

Well I'd rather wish for my friend/relative/partner to no longer be in suffering than to not say anything at all. What would you have people say instead of R.I.P., LeatherTrumpet?

Very good point. Many people have suffered great pain before they die - years of pain and suffering all of kinds that many of us could not imagine. I agree, it's a respectful wish, and hoping that their suffering (of whatever sort) may now be over.

I don't think there's any real need to be 'sarcastic'. Many people do believe in such thiings - and I'd say it was pretty disrespectful to mock that, them, or their belief.

I personally don't believe in that - but many religions do believe in such things. I think it's a bit crass to mock somone simply because you don't share their belief. Having a difference of opinion is understandable, one still has be be respectful of how others beliefs are important to them thought it may not be to everyones.

I dont think any adult really believes that, they may hope it is true or that it is not but no one believes such utter unmitigated pish.

No religion deserves respect because it is based on lies and intolerance.

I would say that some could find that unbelievably insulting, in the extreme.

I don't believe it is any one person's right to mock why someone would believe in an afterlife.

Any adult is allowed their own opinion, their own belief in the matter on how they pay respects to the deceased loved ones, without it being regarded as, 'Utter, unmitigated pish'.

Perhaps I'm more understanding than you? Therein lies a very large difference of opinion between you and I.

I don't think you are going to get anywhere Pyramid,However, leather trumpet, The voice of reason (Lord help us), is incorrect on many issues in his/her posts, for instance:- Cemeteries are not in Church grounds and many people are buried not for religious ideals but because some people believe that as we have to be formed so there may be a reason for the natural decomposition process too.
Churchyards are the burial areas attached to a Church or in its grounds, Cemeteries are not.

Many non religious people and Atheists are buried in Cemeteries that have no Church or Chapel in them or parts with no consecrated ground either.

The main reason for graveyards is religion. That is the main reason. They are outdated and will, like religion, die out.

That is your view and you are entitled of course to hold it and defend it, even if it is wrong.
