I think theme weeks are only good if it's a genre, not an artist, and even then they're usually rubbish to watch. It's nonsense to harp on about being "relevant and current" and then have a Michael Jackson week or something, let them sing "relevant and current" songs if that's what they want. At the end of the competition the winner (and some of the other contestants, usually) will launch a career and they need to release music that people will buy in order to continue to have a career, and if people grow to like the winner because they've been singing cover versions of songs from the 80s, they're not going to really warm to them when they release music for the 2010s, are they? I get that the show is an entertainment show firstly and foremostly and that theatrics and dramatics will always come first, but it still makes no sense from a business POV for SyCo to have artists on their roster that won't sell music.
