Jay seems very unaware indeed.
He seems to think that everyone thinks the same way as he does and therefore looks totally shocked and bemused when things don't go the way he was expecting them to.

I think he's probably so used to all of his geordie pals and all of the dumb women he pulls telling him how great he is that he just can't get his head around people who don't feel that way.

That's probably why he likes Louise so much (and the fact that she's no doubt better to look at than his usual level of 'bird')
